We know there are many stories to tell from the minority architects around the State\, and if we had the chance to share them\, we wanted to do it LOUDLY. \nWe are excited to announce that we have currently TRIPLED the largest SAY IT LOUD exhibition to date\, with over 120 submissions! Due to the overwhelming interest\, we have decided to extend the deadline to this Friday\, April 9th to allow for all others interested to be included in this record-breaking effort. THE DEADLINE WILL NOT BE EXTENDED FURTHER. \nSubmit Your Work\nOn behalf of North Carolina’s Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NCNOMA) and American Institute of Architects North Carolina (AIANC)\, it is our pleasure to invite you to showcase your work through SAY IT LOUD – NC virtual exhibition in spring of 2021. \nYou can submit to SAY IT LOUD – North Carolina here! \nWe appreciate the support of our community across the State dedicated to SAY IT LOUD as we share these stories. If you are interested in being involved we would love to speak to you! \nAn Internationally-Recognized Effort and Exhibition\nNorth Carolina’s Chapters of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NCNOMA) and the American Institute of Architects (AIANC) are pleased to bring the internationally-recognized exhibition\, SAY IT LOUD by Beyond the Built Environment\, to North Carolina in 2021! SAY IT LOUD – North Carolina will elevate the contributions of BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, People of Color) and women designers\, architects\, engineers and planners through a two-part virtual and physical exhibit with a program series. \nSharing North Carolina Stories\nThe SAY IT LOUD – North Carolina exhibition will be in two parts\, starting with a virtual exhibit in May 2021\, followed by a physical exhibit in 2022. Both will feature projects by the diverse design professionals in our state\, as well as quotes and video interviews on their experiences in the architecture and design professions. The concept of this exhibit is “To see our faces\, hear our voices\, feel our impact within the colorful tapestry of our heritage.” SAY IT LOUD is the activation of a national movement of sharing\, protecting and celebrating the journey of the underrepresented to inspire the next generation. \nSAY IT LOUD – North Carolina will engage diverse audiences through programming organized at the time of exhibition to elevate the identities and contributions of minority architects and designers with curated lectures\, and documentaries that testify to the provided value of their built work and its spatial impact. To date\, SAY IT LOUD exhibitions have been viewed by an estimated total 36\,000 visitors since January 2017. From inception\, multiple online publications (such as Curbed and The Architects Newspaper) with large subscription bases have helped promote the exhibitions further expanding its impact. DESCRIPTION:The Foundation for Carbon Neutral Design\n*2 HSW Hours*\nOver the past few decades\, it has become commonplace to think about the energy efficiency of the buildings we create during the design phase. More recently\, the analysis has expanded to include the impact on greenhouse gas emissions and climate. AIA has made the commitment of working toward carbon-neutral buildings as a cornerstone of the AIA 2030 Challenge. How will your next project contribute to greenhouse gas reduction and support this AIA goal? What can you do to make decarbonization a part of your design goals? What changes are happening in the energy industry that will affect how buildings use energy and how will that affect design decisions? In this presentation we will show how you can take steps to achieve these objectives and you will hear from a panel of your peers about what they have achieved and how they have gone about achieving it.

DESCRIPTION:Cracking the Code on Fire and Smoke Rated Assemblies\nIn this course\, Maxson Associates will give an overview of the multiple types of fire and smoke separation defined in the International Building Code and the code requirements for their respective opening protection assemblies\, as well as the testing of all discussed assemblies. They will also discuss the differing types of solutions found in the marketplace today and how they are compliant/non-compliant with the building code requirements of each wall type referenced in the IBC. The course is intended to give attendees the basic steps in evaluating product test performance against those building code requirements.

SUMMARY:The Climate Imperative - AIA's Urgent Move Towards Environmental Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Unequaled in AIA’s 162 year history\, The Big Move for Environmental Sustainability resolution passed at the 2019 annual business meeting represents a “dramatic and unprecedented change in focus.” In conjunction with what the AIA has informally nicknamed the Big Move Toward Environmental Stewardship\, the resolution marks a bold step forward in positioning the architectural profession as key leaders for climate action. It outlines three key areas: declare an urgent climate imperative for carbon reduction; transform the day-to-day practice of architects to achieve a zero-carbon\, equitable\, resilient and healthy built environment; and leverage support of peers\, clients\, policy makers\, and the public at large. \nWhile sustainability is a complex subject\, even for those whose expertise brings them neck deep in it\, AIANC has prepared a program which provides the context and describes the transformation that is necessary for architects to take a leadership role in addressing the Climate Imperative. The Climate Action Plan reiterates our commitment to designing a sustainable\, healthy and equitable world. \nWebinar will be presented by Richard Alsop\, Jr. AIA\, AIA North Carolina Director of Advocacy. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nOverview of the scope of the Climate Crisis\, the impact already evident and the risks it poses in the immediate future to all of our living systems including the way we design and construct buildings to combat further impact on our environment.\nReview of the recently released US Federal Government Climate Report called “The National Climate Assessment of Impacts\, Risks\, and Adaptation in the United States” and how it parallels the AIA program and how it affects current building codes and energy codes across North Carolina and the United States.\nA detailed look at AIA’s program on “The Big Move Toward Environmental Sustainability” This includes a review of the Committee on the Environment’s (COTE) Framework for Design Excellence and tools for architects to use for their projects in support of the resolution on climate.\nReview of programs\, codes\, and tools to support architects as they adapt their professional practices to the ever-evolving challenges posed by Climate Change.

This eight hour workshop informs attendees of the most critical energy code changes and provides best practices to not only meet the new requirements\, but exceed them as well. Instructed by energy code and building science experts Meghan McDermott of High Performance Building Solutions and Jarrett Davis of MaxLife Industries\, this workshop will help you\, your organization and your customers comply with the new energy code requirements where you need to\, and exceed them where you want to. \nIn addition to the energy code updates\, energy efficiency design experts from Willdan will deliver a one hour interactive course demonstrating how energy-efficiency goals—when addressed beginning in schematic design—can be successfully achieved\, saving valuable resources such as design time and client budgets. The session begins with an overview of how comparative analysis assists in achieving energy conservation goals alongside factors that drive energy use. A case study building forming the basis of the charrette will be presented\, including an overview of conservation strategies available for consideration. Participants will then break out into small groups and assemble “bundles” of selected energy efficiency measures to play out what-if scenarios\, discussing the merits and challenges of each bundle.
