SUMMARY:AIAWS | October Lunch and Learn
DESCRIPTION:The Cold Hard Truth About What You Are Not Hearing\n\n\n*1 HSW / LU* \nThis seminar will examine the advancement of radiant heat and sound control for today’s construction\, and how it effects the tile and stone industry. Tile and stone have excellent heat conduction qualities\, but not as exceptional for sound abatement. Combining the two can be confusing\, and if not properly addressed. could cause failure in the tile or stone floor. However\, with proper details and specifications\, the combination of in floor heat and sound control could offer a long term\, maintenance free flooring assembly that adds great value to a project. \nLearning Objectives: \n1. Recognize two types of sound control ratings\, Sound Transmission Class (STC) and Impact Insulation Class (IIC).\n2. Distinguish between and IIC rating and a delta IIC contribution.\n3. Identify the components of a floor/ceiling assembly required for effective sound control.\n4. List the characteristics of different sound control materials suitable for use underneath a tiled floor covering.

DESCRIPTION:*1 LU*\n\n\nAIA Contract Documents \nConstruction clauses that you believe to be benign\, may actually jeopardize the financial well-being of your design firm\, and the health\, safety\, and welfare of the public. It is imperative for design firms to have a thorough understanding of these “deadly clauses” and how to identify and correct faulty language in order to mitigate associated risks. Join us for a free webinar as presenters review construction contract clauses regarding instruments of service\, right to withhold or offset fees\, reliance on owner supplied information\, coordination of owner’s consultants\, limiting liability\, compliance with civil rights legislation\, and prevailing party clauses. \nAttendees will: \n\nKnow how to establish an effective process for conducting a thorough review\, interpretation and negotiation of design contracts for construction projects.\nReview common problematic contractual clauses\, often overlooked by the design professional.\nGain tools and strategies for negotiation in order to remove\, amend or diffuse the harmful language.\nKnow where to access reliable resources and contacts to help in review of agreements.

SUMMARY:The Skill You Need: Career Resilience
DESCRIPTION:*1 LU*\nCOVID-19 has spurred one of the most intense economic downturns of our time. The pandemic has shifted the profession to a virtual workforce overnight and 2020 graduates are entering the profession with a lot of unknowns. Starting your career in the midst of a recession can be intimidating\, but architects learned a few lessons in 2009. Join architects who entered the workforce during the Great Recession of 2008 as they speak to their own experiences\, share some practical steps to move towards economic stability\, and offer guidance on how to maintain mental well-being and build a resilient career. \nIn this webinar you will: \n\nLearn about the experiences of 4 architects as they navigated the beginning of their careers during a recession.\nAssess your inventory of tools and skills to maximize your hiring potential.\nExplore opportunities for engaging community and maintaining mental health during an economic downturn.\nIdentify opportunities for building your career through networking engagements and resources.\n\nREGISTER HERE by June 11 @ 1:30 pm: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/6837325558965448459 \n

SUMMARY:Acoustics\, Technology\, and Lighting - The Impact of COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:*CE Credit Pending*\nRegistration is REQUIRED by June 2 at 10 AM: event website found in “Details” below.\nPresented by Steven J. Thorburn with Thorburn Associates\nThis session will review the impact COVID-19 will have on building design and systems as it relates to acoustics\, technology\, and lighting design. Acoustically\, the workplace will require redesigning. The current high-density hoteling of workers will not be accepted in the future due to social distancing. This will impact office acoustics as well as noise levels within restaurants. \nOver the last 3 months\, the A/E industry has found that most of us can work from a laptop and if we have a high-speed connection\, can work from home. We have been remotely doing that at client meetings and job sites for years. It is the actual production work that is more efficient on larger and multiple monitors that will create the challenge. \nHuddle rooms will be expanded in our designs – how do we make sure we can fit out these spaces for easy collaboration? \nThere will be increased requirements for hands-free gesturing at public touch screens and digital signage. \nFinally lighting – Can UV lighting help sanitize the environments we travel though. \nThis interactive session will address these questions and any others the participants bring up. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will explain how designing a building for social distancing can impact speech privacy and speech intelligibility\nParticipants will describe why the finish materials that affect the buildup of sound within a space can reduce speech intelligibility\nParticipants will demonstrate best communications practices while participating in video calls and why the physical design and finishes of the room are so critical\nParticipants will identify the critical design elements of wall and floor/ceiling systems and technology components required for collaboration/huddle/zoom rooms\nParticipants will describe the types of UV light and their impact on pathogens and the human body

SUMMARY:Resinous Floor and Wall Surfaces for Educational Facilities
DESCRIPTION:*1 LU*\nGiven the varied use of educational facility spaces – from classrooms to kitchens to gymnasiums – the selection of proper floor and wall surfaces is a complex decision involving many environmental considerations. The right system protects your investment\, the wrong system could result in costly repairs\, damage to the building and its contents\, possibly an early replacement\, regulatory citation or disruption to students and faculty. During the presentation\, the presenter will discuss the following learning objectives to get a better understanding of resinous floor and wall surfaces for educational facilities. \n  \nRegister for the webinar here: https://www2.na-sika.com/l/227082/2020-04-29/7csb2

SUMMARY:AIAU: Acoustics in Open-to-Structure Environments
DESCRIPTION:*1 LU*\nLIVE WEBINAR COURSE \nAs more and more commercial interiors\, from offices to schools\, veer toward open concepts and exposed structures\, the spaces become susceptible to noise. And for occupants\, excessive noise can lead to increased stress\, lower productivity\, decreased focus\, and poor communication. This session will help architects understand the challenge by exploring how sound is generated\, transmitted\, and reverberates. Attendees will learn a simpler approach to sabins\, how to calculate absorption\, and how to apply that knowledge to designing ceiling systems that hit the sweet spot for noise reduction. \nLearning Objectives:\n\nAddress acoustical design challenges in open-to-structure spaces.\nReview fundamentals of sound and define key acoustical terms.\nExplain and compare various measures of sound absorption.\nDefine reverberation time as a key room acoustic design parameter.\nExamine acoustical treatments best suited for open to structure spaces and review sample reverberation time calculations.
