SUMMARY:High Performance & Resilient Precast Educational Facilities
DESCRIPTION:*1 HSW*\nHOSTED BY:  The Regional Chapters of PCI  \nSPONSORED BY:  Georgia/Carolinas PCI \nPRESENTED BY:  Peter Finsen\, FPCI\, Assoc. AIA\nExecutive Director & CEO of Georgia/Carolinas PCI \nDescription:\nThe evolving construction industry\, recent code changes\, increasing sustainability requirements and challenging economy are just some of the factors increasing demand for safe\, healthy\, high performance educational facilities. Today’s schools are more than just buildings; they are interactive learning environments. They are gathering places. They are safe havens for the community. This presentation will discuss recommendations on how to design and build high performance\, sustainable and resilient schools\, with reduced life-cycle costs. The benefits of prefabrication and off-site construction will be identified in the context of precast/prestressed concrete architectural and structural building solutions. And case studies will highlight high performance attributes –  including optimization of numerous versatile\, efficient and resilient building applications.\nLearning Objectives:\n1.  Define high performance structures and identify key attributes and benefits of high performance and sustainable learning environments educational facilities.\n2.  Explain basic approaches to high performance and resilient school design using precast concrete.\n3.  Promote the concept of functional resilience and its importance in educational facilities.\n4.  Learn how prefabricated\, integrated architectural and structural precast concrete design solutions contribute to life safety features including: fire safety\, storm resistance\, acoustics and indoor air quality.\n5.  Share how off-site construction and prefabricated manufacturing with natural\, low-embodied energy materials contribute to life cycle design\, accelerate construction\, reduce site disturbance and waste\, reduce transportation of materials and provide easier coordination of trades.\n6.  Describe concepts to control cost and quality\, reduce maintenance\, and meet sustainable design goals.

SUMMARY:AIAU: US State and Local Codes
DESCRIPTION:*1 HSW*\nLIVE WEBINAR COURSE \nCodes and standards are developed scientifically and support the needs of our society extremely well. But because we have such a large country\, local variations make the codes complex and difficult to digest\, understand\, and comply. As architects\, we are responsible for satisfying society’s demands for buildings that are safe\, secure\, healthy\, energy efficient\, accessible\, functional\, sustainable\, and high-performance\, all while complying with enforced codes and standards. This session will explore the challenges architects face with codes and standards while navigating solutions\, offering best practices\, and providing strategies for managing compliance. \nLearning Objectives:\n\nUnderstand why codes and standards are different in different states and localities in the US.\nExpand current knowledge and review updates of applicable building codes and standards in US.\nUnderstand best practices and guidelines on code compliance and creating safe buildings.\nHow to tackle compliance challenges

SUMMARY:AIAU: Rapid-Response Housing in Pandemic Environments
DESCRIPTION:*1 HSW*\nLIVE WEBINAR COURSE \nKing County\, Washington\, was the “epicenter” of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. Learn how DLR Group partnered with the county to deliver nearly 1\,000 quarantine\, assessment\, and recovery beds in various communities within a matter of weeks through rapid assessment\, design\, and construction methods. Lessons learned will equip designers and communities to better manage pandemic events in the future. \nLearning objectives\n\n\nDescribe the growth of COVID-19 in Washington to explain the needs for quarantine\, assessment\, and recovery beds as key to the rapid response King County developed for this specific population.\nDescribe the approach used to identify and plan the COVID-19 AC/RC sites.\nIdentify conditions at one specific site including process and layout.\nSummarize lessons learned as DLR Group went through the planning and design of multiple sites.
