“There and Back Again: An IDEXlab” Tale

This presentation reviews the structural changes – and changing nature – of the Integrative Design Experience Laboratory at Appalachian State University from the perspective of a 2019 pre-pandemic → 2020 pandemic → 2021 post-pandemic thruline. Emphasis is placed on lessons learned in our practice of design to build pedagogy and the in-practice implementation of those lessons in real time. Projects presented include: (2019) US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Design Challenge Suburban Single Family and Attached Housing submissions; (2020) COVID-19 responsive designs; and (2021) the Yancey County Farmers’ Market in Burnsville, NC.
