AIAU: Rapid-Response Housing in Pandemic Environments

King County, Washington, was the “epicenter” of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. Learn how DLR Group partnered with the county to deliver nearly 1,000 quarantine, assessment, and recovery beds in various communities within a matter of weeks through rapid assessment, design, and construction methods. Lessons learned will equip designers and communities to better manage pandemic events in the future.
Learning objectives
- Describe the growth of COVID-19 in Washington to explain the needs for quarantine, assessment, and recovery beds as key to the rapid response King County developed for this specific population.
- Describe the approach used to identify and plan the COVID-19 AC/RC sites.
- Identify conditions at one specific site including process and layout.
- Summarize lessons learned as DLR Group went through the planning and design of multiple sites.

AIAWS had the first event for our 2024 #ACTIVATE Community project! We're partnering with Crossnore Communities for Children for a Design-Build Project. Together with their staff & the kids, we're designing and building an incentive cart to be used on campus, bringing art supplies, ice cream, hot chocolate, and more to all the kids on campus. ![]()
This event was the design portion, and seeing the kids bring their ideas to life on paper was so exciting! Their imaginations were endless and their creativity was unmatched! We can't wait to come back on campus and build & decorate this cart with them!![]()
